You can't always avoid accidents. You may take a bad step, trip, and chip your tooth. It's also possible that a tooth can become discolored from an illness or medication. Our certified dental team performs bonding and contouring to improve small cosmetic flaws at our office in Newton, MA. An effective and quick treatment, bonding and contouring uses composite resin (also used for tooth-colored fillings) to hide discoloration, fill gaps between teeth, lengthen a tooth, and even improve a tooth's shape. "These guys always go the extra mile."- R.B. / Yelp / Oct 15, 2021
"We could not be happier with Dr. Jonathan Stephens. From our first consult I knew he was the right person to extract my son's wisdom teeth. He was personable, easy to talk with, explained the procedure in detail, answered all of our questions, and had a positive friendly attitude. We never felt rushed in any way. On visit day, it was more of the same. We were made to feel welcomed, comfortable, and again Dr. Stephens reviewed the procedure, fielded my worried mom questions with clarity and professionalism while being warm and empathetic at the same time. He reviewed the x-rays with us, interacted directly with my son and made him feel comfortable. AND, he gave us his cell phone number, called that night to check on my son, and we have spoken 3 more times since. I would recommend Dr. Stephens without any reservation!"- D.D. / Healthgrades / Dec 24, 2020

Dental bonding and contouring may fix gaps, chips, cracks, discoloration, tooth length, and other flaws. Dental bonding and contouring is a more affordable cosmetic procedure and can usually be done in a single appointment. It does not need prep work, like crowns or veneers, but it is not as strong and typically does not stay on as long. Dental bonding and contouring is ideal for minor flaws, but if you want bigger improvements, a different restorative or cosmetic treatment may be better. At your consult, we will listen to your needs and wants and then discuss your options.
What To Expect
Bonding and contouring will be typically done in a single appointment in our office in Newton, MA. You shouldn't need anesthesia; however, options for sedation may be reviewed at your consult for concerns, like fear, anxiety, and a strong gag reflex. As soon as you're ready, we will apply the bonding material to the desired areas aided by one of our dental assistants. The composite resin will be set with more layers added, as needed. After the layers of composite resin are set, we will shape and smooth the composite resin and your natural enamel for a beautiful result.
Once you've had bonding and contouring, it's important to not consume staining drinks and food (such as tea, coffee, and tobacco) for two days. The bonding material can stain and chip so do not bite hard objects, like ice, hard candy, pens, and your fingernails, and clean your teeth immediately after eating. Teeth that have been bonded and contoured need to be cared for like natural teeth with daily flossing, brushing, and mouthwash. Dental cleanings at Newton Centre Dental can help to polish away stains from the bonding material. With good care, bonding and contouring may last as long as ten years. At your dental examination, we can help you determine if your dental bonding and contouring procedure should be done again to refresh your smile.
Bonding and contouring is an aesthetic treatment so it's typically not paid by insurance. Our office can talk to your dental insurance company to double-check if it is covered; however, you will probably need to pay for the cost of the treatment on your own. At your consult, we will discuss your estimated costs and payment methods we accept at Newton Centre Dental.
